Basics of Hemorrhoids -- What You Need to Know

Getting to know a little bit about the basics of hemorrhoids isn't really all that hard. Unfortunately, the one thing that is standing in your way as far as that is concerned is the simple fact that there's a whole lot of misinformation out there that you're going to need to sort through in order to get the right picture.

Due to this, it is probably best that you begin right from the very basics, and so the question that you should answer first is: What exactly are hemorrhoids?

Generally speaking, hemorrhoids are essentially inflammation and swelling of the veins within the rectum and anus. However, there are two main types of hemorrhoids, and these are the internal and external varities. As their names imply, internal hemorrhoids occur within the rectum itself, whereas external hemorrhoids are at the anus or outer part of the anal canal.

Both of these are distinct. Although they share the same rough characteristic features, the truth is that internal hemorrhoids aren't really that painful for the most part, whereas external hemorrhoids can be very painful indeed. That being said, both have the tendency to bleed -- especially when irritatated for various reasons.

Frankly speaking, many people get hemorrhoids at some point or other -- but very few actually notice it. For the most part, hemorrhoids could come and go and you'd never be the wiser. Sure, you might notice some blood when you visit the washroom, there might be little or no pain and whatever swelling is there could subside in a matter of days.

On the flipside however, some hemorrhoids are definitely the kind of thing that you might notice as they can be extremely painful. Severe cases of internal hemorrhoids have even been known to swell up and start to show up outside the anus itself. When that happens, you could find that even something as simple as sitting down ends up being a difficulty.

Knowing all of this about hemorrhoids should provide you with a basic starting point from which you can build your understanding of the condition. Make no mistake, people who suffer from chronic hemorrhoids do go through an extremely painful experience.

While there are options of treatment that you can resort to, even that can be touch and go at times. No single treatment has been known to provide a definitive cure for this condition, which makes it all the more important that you're able to prevent hemorrhoids rather than have to go looking for a cure.

In many cases, preventing hemorrhoids simply involves a few simple yet extremely effective changes to your lifestyle, so that you're less likely to succumb to its normal causes. Granted, this could be easier said than done, but it is certainly worth it as opposed to having to suffer in so many ways as a result of not taking the right steps.

Keep this in mind, and if you suspect that you're suffering from hemorrhoids, be sure to visit a doctor as soon as possible before it worsens!
